Recent Interior Design MFA graduate Tony Purvis has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 American Society of Interior Designer’s (ASID) Joel Polsky Academic Achievement Award. This award is given annually by the ASID Educational Foundation to recognize an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student’s interior design research or thesis project. Entries were judged on content, breadth of material, comprehensive coverage of topic, innovative subject matter, and the quality of the bibliography and references. Tony’s thesis was titled “Conflict Resolution and the Interior Built Environment: Design Considerations for Consensus Building.” In the course of the study, which involved surveys and interviews with 476 members of the Association for Conflict Resolution (North America’s largest dispute professional trade organization), eight ideal characteristics of spaces supportive for conflict mediation purposes were identified. Future studie s intend to develop a practical tool for dispute professionals to use onsite to assess and modify spaces for this purpose.

Works in this exhibition trace artistic legacy – from family member to family member, from teacher to student, from the 1st generation of an art movement to the 2nd generation, and from a specific culture (Native American, for example) to the culture at large. Generations includes international artists like Maya Lin (creator of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC) and her ceramicist father, Henry Lin, or Prefete Duffaut (a top Haitian aritst who died earlier this year) and his son Jean Charles, to regional artists like second generation Highwayman, Aletha Butler, the recipient of the techniques of the first generation of Highwaymen, painters like James Gibson. The exhibition includes works by 41 artists.

This exhibition utilized a unique curatorial process. Teachers from 14 schools came together with the curator of education from the FSU Museum of Fine Arts to organize the show itself and its various educational components. Joining the curatorial team were representatives from other Tallahassee organizations: Council on Culture and Arts (COCA), Holocaust Education Resource Council (HERC), Mission San Luis, and the Tallahassee Community College Gallery.

Haitian artist, Jean Charles Duffaut, will speak at the FSU MoFA on Thursday, May 16 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Children’s art, based on the work by the Generations artists, will be displayed in a parallel exhibition on the downstairs level of the FSU Museum (May 10 to June 7) and at the TCC Gallery (May 20 to July 26). Artists in the exhibition will interact with teachers and students. Mission San Luis will host a hands-on Family Day on Saturday, May 18 (10:00 am to 3:00 pm) featuring Generations techniques and artists, including Haitian artist Jean Charles Duffaut.

Preceding the exhibition itself, the Generations Project will offer a teacher workshop on April 8 in which Ela Weissberger, a Holocaust survivor, will speak about the legacy of her art teacher, Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, who surreptitiously taught children at the Terezin concentration camp and died at Auschwitz. Leon County Schools, the FSU Schools, and C-Palms join the other curatorial organizations to help sponsor this event.

Art on Trial: Art Therapy in Capital Murder Cases
Synopsis from Amazon.com

A man kidnaps his two children, murders one, and attempts to kill the other. At his trial, the prosecution seeks the death penalty, while the defense exhausts all available resources to avoid the sentence. They ultimately turn to more than one hundred examples of the defendant’s artwork, created over his lifetime, to determine whether the man was mentally ill at the time of his crimes. Describing an outstanding example of the use of forensic art therapy in a criminal case, David Gussak, contracted by the defense to analyze the evidence in this instance, recounts his findings and presentation in court, as well as the future implications of his work for criminal proceedings.
Gussak details the role of the art therapist in a murder trial, how to use art as evidence, and the conclusions and assessments experts can draw from a defendant’s art. He examines the effectiveness of expert testimony as communicated by the prosecution, defense, and court, and weighs the moral, ethical, and legal consequences of relying on such evidence. For professionals and general readers, this gripping volume presents a convincing account of art’s ability to reflect a damaged and dangerous psyche. A leading text on an emerging field, Art on Trial demonstrates the practical applications of an innovative approach to clinical assessment and treatment.

Sarah Buck will conduct research in Paris and London during the Fall 2013 semester on the department’s Penelope Mason Dissertation Research Travel Grant.

Alex Challenger will rejoin the department in the fall as a first year PhD student in Art History.

Sam Ewing will join Harvard’s Department of the History of Art and Architecture as a first year PhD student in the fall, where he will continue his work on Cold War era photography and the discourse of avant-gardism. Sam has also been invited to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City this summer to attend a scholars’ day dedicated to the work of Robert Heinecken, the subject of Sam’s recently completed master’s thesis.

Brad Hostetler will be attending the Gennadius Library Medieval Greek Summer Session in Athens, Greece this July.

Kimberly Jones will attend Texas Tech in the fall for a PhD in Fine Arts, an interdisciplinary program. The focus of Kimberly’s studies will be in Modern Art History and Museum Studies.

Natalie Mandziuk will be attending the 2013 Denver University Summer Publishing Institute beginning in July, to begin a career in academic publishing. Natalie’s goal is to work at an academic or university press, scholarly journal, or museum publications department in either editing, acquisitions, or production.

Bryan Schaeffer will participate for his 3rd summer in the Yucatec Maya language program hosted by the UNC-Duke Latin American Consortium. Assisted by a FLAS fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education, Bryan will conduct ongoing fieldwork, collecting stories from local Maya in their own language.

Liz Spraggins will be in Tallahassee this summer, continuing her work on the Carter Collection of Peruvian ceramics and textiles exhibition at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts, which opens August 26, 2013. In the fall, Liz will return as first year PhD student in Art History.
